Drawing on two centuries of historical developments, legal change, public policy, and evolving ideas of protection, this work examines how child separation has been understood, justified, and practised across different periods.

Rather than focusing on a single case or institution, the book traces a broader historical journey—from empire and welfare to contemporary systems of prediction and risk—while asking a continuing question:

What happens when decisions made in the name of protection carry consequences that cannot be undone?
